Originally to hold matches in by the fire.

Back in the day you could strike a match on any rough surface and it would light up, and the back of the tortoise would be perfect. Nowadays of course we have safety matches so this isn’t possible

Would look great on a big stone on the patio or in the garden somewhere

Great place to hide a house key too!
